RSI Overbought in a Strong Trend: Why 70 Is Not a Sell Signal

FuturesRadar Academy · Reviewed September 2026 · Educational only

RSI above 70 describes strong recent positive momentum relative to negative momentum; it does not by itself say that price must reverse. In a sustained trend, RSI can remain overbought across multiple candles while price continues higher.

An indicator threshold is context, not an order. Crypto futures involve substantial risk.

Why RSI can stay above 70

RSI is built from recent gains and losses. When gains repeatedly dominate the calculation window, the ratio can remain elevated. A new positive change enters while another observation leaves the window, so an overbought reading can persist instead of immediately falling after crossing 70.

Overbought versus reversal

“Overbought” is a description of the oscillator state. A reversal is a subsequent price event. Those are different claims. To evaluate a possible reversal, traders commonly inspect price structure, failed breakouts, support or resistance behavior and whether momentum is weakening rather than relying on the threshold alone.

Hypothetical sequence

Suppose five consecutive 15-minute RSI readings are 68, 72, 76, 74 and 71 while price continues to hold above a breakout level. Four readings are at least 70. That persistence tells you momentum has remained elevated; it does not create four independent short signals.

How FuturesRadar treats it

FuturesRadar's OB metric counts qualifying RSI readings in its sampled window. It is a persistence count, not a win rate or reversal probability. The scanner's exact RSI implementation and data limitations are documented in the methodology.
