Crypto Volatility Guide

FuturesRadar Academy • Practical market guide • Not financial advice

Learn why crypto markets move fast and how volatility changes risk.

This guide is educational only. It is not a recommendation to buy, sell, long or short any asset. Crypto futures involve high risk.

The size of price movement

Volatility describes variability in price. It does not by itself specify direction. A market with large moves can generate attractive-looking changes while making execution and position management more difficult.

Percentage matters

A move of 5 on an asset priced at 100 is 5%; the same nominal move on an asset priced at 1,000 is 0.5%. Compare percentage moves or consistent volatility measures instead of raw price distances across coins.

Adapt the interpretation

Wider price swings can require a wider invalidation distance for the same analysis. If the loss budget stays fixed, that generally means a smaller quantity. A rolling 24-hour change is a net move, not a full measure of the swings within the day.

Same ending price, different path

Hypothetical worked example. A hypothetical market moving 100 → 110 → 90 → 100 ends unchanged but travels through substantial swings. Another moving 100 → 101 → 99 → 100 also ends unchanged with a much narrower range. A zero 24-hour change cannot distinguish their intraday risks.

Does a score summarize volatility?

No. The score uses positive net price change, quote volume, RSI and OB; it does not calculate a volatility estimate or expected maximum loss.
